CITY OF BENDIGO - OASIS IN THE BUSH

& ARCHITECTURAL SHOWCASE

(the Shamrock Hotel, Post Office, Schoolhouse, Courthouse, Cathedral and Townhouse) and CHANCERY LANE.

Warning: if you are a person who is bored with achitecture, you may want to discontinue reading right now.

Sandro, Bella and I were able to get away for a couple of days and decided to go to Bendigo which is a city out in the country about two hours north of Melbourne. Sandro and I are a little obssessed with architecture - always have been and always will be - and so most of our photos from our almost two decade marriage is kids and architecture (including renovations). We love all architecture but are partial to anything old world, historic, antique and we love decoré in these forms as well. Although we love the city we also love the country and that's where Bendigo is perfect because it's a bit of both. Most of the people that we met here were the salt-of-the-earth, country types that were eager to make us feel at home.

As soon as we pulled up outside I knew it was going to be just beautiful inside. The Shamrock
was first built in 1854 and has housed guests from all over the world including the
late Princess Diana.

I think this building was originally the Townhouse.

A café balcony.

Sandro and Bella went to the War Memorial Museum.

She's really got the hang of cartwheels now.

Are you ready for this folks? This is the most magnificent building I have ever seen and is the second largest Catholic Cathedral ( you can tell it's Catholic as they/we like to do everything on a grand and glorious scale) in Australia.

Very gothic.

When I walked inside it literally took my breath away.

The Cathedral was built back in the early 1900's and is insured for $150 million. Just the upkeep of it takes lots of money and man hours and is mostly done by volunteers.

The Townhouse

A central garden conservatory.

Bella noticed the horse mermaids in bronze at the base.

If you're an artist of any kind (musican, writer, painter etc) and you want to go somewhere to sip a chai or latte or to practice your art don't waste your time going to all of the other cafés - come straight here to Chancery Lane. It really is as quaint and bustling as it looks and yet set apart from the rest of the city, so secluded and a well kept secret. Just the perfect little, artistic nook.

Warning: if you have any mediumistic ability at all and you choose to stay at the Shamrock, white light yourself and close your chakras (see my article entitled Psychic Protection) BEFORE you go into the building as it is thick with spirit life and most of them are of the unsavoury type; it was some hours before I realised what was going on and spent that time feeling so depleted I had to lie down and sleep (and miss out on all of the photo taking fun) - not a very pleasant experience.
